Gwendolyn Seely (1934-2017, known as Gwen) & Kenneth Joseph Goates

Gwendolyn Seely Goates

After graduating from BYU, Gwen taught school for four years, specialized in recreation, and was dance director in two LDS stakes at the same time in Salt Lake City. She did the solo dance in one of the LDS churchwide June dance festivals at the University of Utah.

The following is from Gwen's obituary:

Gwendolyn Seely Goates passed away on Thursday, 30 November 2017, of heart-related causes. She was the daughter of beloved parents F. Leland (Jim) Seely and Grace Emily Thompson. She was born at home in Brigham City, Utah, on 16 October 1934. Gwen attended elementary schools through high school in Brigham City, and graduated from Box Elder High School in 1952. She later attended Weber State, and then, Brigham Young University, where she graduated with a degree in elementary education in 1956.

Gwen’s early years were spent in Brigham City, where she was frequently involved with singing and dancing. While teaching 2nd grade at Jackson Elementary, she also taught dancing at the “Thursday-night Dances,” where single folks come to dance and socialize. The dances were held in various stake centers around the Salt Lake valley. It was at one of these dances that she met her husband, Kenneth Joseph Goates, who was attending BYU in Provo at the time. They were married on December 18, 1959 in the Salt Lake City Temple.

Gwen served her Heavenly Father by accepting calls to serve in the following auxiliaries and organizations: Primary, Young Women, Sunday school, Nursery, Ward Librarian, and President of the Relief Society in her ward.

Her greatest love and challenge was her precious family. She gave up teaching to be with and support her husband and children. She has a strong testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ, and was a true disciple all her life. She was well-known as a kind, and generous person, beloved and respected by all who knew her.

Gwen is survived by her husband (Kenneth Joseph Goates) and her children: Linda Marie McKinney (Mark), Michael Joseph Goates (Deena), Katherine Mills (Kelly), Lori Charlesworth (David), and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Glen (Nita), James (Ellie), and Kent (Mary), and preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Joyce Richman (Lynn), Dr. Leland Seely (Annalies), and Karen Galloway (Daryl).

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the newly constructed church 1850 South 2300 East, Spanish Fork, Utah, where a viewing will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be at the Lehi City Cemetery, where a brief graveside service will be held prior to the burial at 2:00p.m.

James Edward Seely (known as Jimmy or Jim) & Ellie

Jimmy served an LDS mission in Germany.

Read this story "Raised from the Dead" by Jim Seely about Ella Jensen being raised from the dead by Lorenzo Snow. He explains how this story has touched his life. The story he references appeared in the September and October 1929 issues of the Improvement Era (here is a file with parts 1 and 2 of the story in one file). It also appeared in the book Lorenzo Snow: Spiritual Giant, Prophet of God. Also read Lorenzo Snow's patriarchal blessing referenced in the story. Also read a letter from David Jensen explaining another part of the story.
