Rick was an accomplished drummer. He took lessons from the renowned Hank Houst and went on to teach drum lessons for most of his life. In college, he played drums for the BYU Vocal Jazz group.

Rick served in the California Anaheim Mission. His missionary farewell was June 8, 1980, and he entered the Missionary Training Center (MTC) on June 25. The family attended an orientation meeting where they spoke about the MTC and gave suggestions to the families and the missionaries. Four hundred missionaries entered the MTC that day—more than had ever entered in one day.
